Capitol

A capital assessment.

Although I have doubts about Noble he was not the most immobile of our players when that goal was scored. The four defenders all failed in their jobs, And only Zaba put in half a challenge.

I think Noble knows what to do but struggles to do it with pace. The defenders often look uncertain as to what position to take up and when to challenge and when not. Hesitation at that level will often get punished.

Re: Noble / Wilshire
Your right Capital, but it is annoying to see Noble jogging at full sprint behind Wilson as he passes each defender and finally scores by kicking the ball right at Fabianski
It was all a bit freaky, not sure if it can ever happen again, well not before Saturday

Re: Noble / Wilshire

That's a bit of a ridiculous interpretation. There were four other defenders in a better position to handle the player, Noble would essentially have had to tackle him from behind.

worm

As I've said before I think he's best played as an attacking midfielder as when he started. I think he might have progressed in this position but found himself in a DM role.

Some of us have been saying for 5 years that Noble needs replacing.

Never improved as a player after the age of 22

Pellers says Noble has a problem with his back.

Boleyn it may be what we see as half paced jog is in fact Noble sprinting "balls out" ;-)

Re: Noble / Wilshire
I still can't shake off the memory of Noble jogging at half pace following Wilson for the first Bournemouth goal last week. If he starts on Saturday against Arsenal the Pellegrini wants shooting

Stuart Pearce comment talking about when he and Moyes were managing:

“It probably took us a while when we came in the door to suggest certain players can’t play in the back four, gotta put bodies around certain players as there is lack of pace in there so you have to cover them up a lot of bit"

Not been addressed. Pellegrini and Hussilos ( spelling) either were not watching us for months as claimed or more likely have totally underestimated this factor? As all recent management teams have going back to Pards

Although Keen and Hughes were more attacking midfielders than others listed imo they are examples of grafters in the midfield,

Neither were prolific goal scorers or real fancy Dans but they always put in a shift,

I think it was in 1990-1 that Keen banged in a few goals when we got promoted but in other years it was more his effort that caught my eye.

Not sure where Kevin Keen or Michael Hughes fit into this.

I really liked Bambi as a player. One of my favourite days at UP was a bank holiday game vs Barnsley, back in the old second division (1990 ? I've a shite memory for this stuff).

Barnsley had a really good midfielder called Steve Agnew, but Keen ran riot that day and scored twice, we won 4-2. Cracking day on the North Bank. I pity the poor fuckers who never lived it.

Neil Orr, pivotal in the 85/86 season playing 33 games. Seem to remember we were in the hunt and he got injured and couldn't get back in because he had been replaced by the typical headless chicken fans favourite Pike. The fixture pile up and that decision cost us dear in my view.

Re: Noble / Wilshire
I think between them Alex V and Sir Alf have a pretty good analysis of our middle of the park problems.

I would add that given the failings it is hard to understand that a succession of managers including the latest have failed to notice our major weakness.

In recent times and especially now they seem to miss the point that whilst when West Ham teams played at their best they always had in the middle relatively unsung heroes working their nuts off to permit the "maverick " and "flair players" the luxury of playing the "West Ham Way"

In my time I would list the following

Andy Malcolm
Eddie Bovington
Ron Boyce
Patsy Holland
Geoff Pike
Kevin Keen
Michael Huges
Steve Lomas
Hayden Mullins
Noble ( in his prime)

Not many since

There, of course, have been others which you would add and others with wider acclaim Bonds Parker etc,

We could definitely benefit from any of the above even if styles of football have changed there is still room for hard graft and effort in the heart of the midfield

Honestly can't believe in our brave new world we started a game with Wishire, Noble and Snodgrass in midfield.
We must see how we go without Noble, no one is undropable especially after the start we have made.

It worries me as well.

You'd have to think Rice has the most upside potential to slot into the DM slot. May take a few games to get him up to speed but he seems able to learn.

Mex Martillo 7:44 Wed Aug 22
Re: Noble / Wilshire
I really think it is not a problem of individuals, Noble or Sanchez (for me Sanchez is a complete shot in the dark to think he is better than Noble) are not the main problem or solution. As many are saying the problem is the way we play. I am sure Pellegrini wants the team to move as a unit and not leave big gaps with one poor player exposed that can easily be exploited. Is it Nobles fault that at various points in a game no one gets back and a massive gaps opens between our midfield and our defence.

I watched Place v Liverpool on Monday, they spent most of the game with two very displined lines of 4 and 5 defending and the Liverpool had alot more trouble to break them down. They also got forward and attacked alot in the 2nd, could have easily been a draw.

Alex V, I do not believe that for a minute. I am sure Rice was told to cover an area and he did not show discipline and went chasing after the ball like the young kid he is. I am sure he learnt a lot in that game. I really would like to see him start against Arsenal.

Russ of the BML (or Abbot?), love that comment, I can hear Guardiola, and if for some bizarra reason we do not have possession make sure Noble has the ball it is the next safest thing...

Of course I cannot stop myself saying they do not dive in for the ball because Noble walks past players that try that on. He is good at slipping past a player that tries to take the ball off him and they know that, best thing is to stand your ground and force a back pass...
